Section 2: Ordinarily available support for children and young people in mainstream settings

All children and young people with additional needs should be encouraged to access strategies and resources described in Section 1. Section 2 describes a range of behaviours with you may notice about a child or young person along with examples of ‘ordinarily available‘ provision and strategies you may want to try. For ease of use these have been organised by area of need as shown below.

Any support or provision should be provided in line with the needs of the CYP, it should not be dependent on a formal diagnosis. For all CYP, withdrawn or challenging behaviours can be a sign of unmet needs and it is important to reflect on behaviours and practice to understand how best to support them.
