Meeting the needs of new arrivals – Secondary Settings

EMTAS has created a collection of advice and resources to help schools meet the needs of International New Arrivals / pupils who are new to English.

For strategies and resources for colleagues working in the Secondary Phase, please see our full guidance document – listed under Downloads (right).

You can also download additional guidance which looks at the specific considerations for those students who arrive later in the secondary phase, as well as an appendix which shows how one school manages the process of identifying, entering and supporting students for Community Language GCSEs (also under Downloads).

If you have any further questions or would like to discuss your approach with an EMTAS Advisory Teacher, please contact a member of our team (see EMAT Contact details – right)

For specific advice for colleagues working in primary settings, please see Meeting the needs of new arrivals – Primary Settings (right).
