Tools for Schools
EMA Advisory Teachers can:
- Support schools to find relevant resources to help the learning of children and young people from minority ethnic backgrounds, particularly those learning through EAL (English as an Additional Language).
- Deliver training to school staff e.g. supporting newly arrived pupils, how to support EAL learners.
- Assist the school in providing an assessment in their first language in order to build a more complete picture of the needs of a bilingual child or young person.
- Signpost to other agencies working with minority ethnic and bilingual children and young people.
- May be involved in the early stages of identifying additional needs, so that a child will receive the appropriate support and guidance, according to their needs.
Our EMA Liaison Officers can:
- Support children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. This might involve a home visit or a meeting at school where the family’s points of views, their questions and concerns can be expressed.
- Support with explaining how the education system works, particularly for pupils with additional needs. The Liaison Officer can help to raise some of those questions and also to help the school to understand the family’s needs and wishes.
- Help schools and families to develop strong links. For example; school activities, uniform, school meals, clubs. This may be via phone calls and emails.
- Support at parent’s consultation meetings, Annual Review meetings and any other meetings to discuss pupil progress.
- Deliver planned projects to schools to support EAL pupils’ learning.
